Superficial veins lie close to the skin and help return blood to the heart. When the one-way valves inside these veins weaken or fail, blood can pool — leading to varicose veins, spider veins, swelling, heaviness, aching, or skin changes. The umbrella diagnosis is venous insufficiency or venous reflux.

You may be a good candidate if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Leg pain, heaviness, or fatigue
  • Visible bulging or rope-like veins
  • Spider veins that cause cosmetic concern
  • Leg swelling, itching, cramping, or restlessness
  • Symptoms that worsen with prolonged standing or sitting

A vascular ultrasound is usually the first step to evaluate the underlying cause and confirm what kind of treatment, if any, makes sense.

At Alchemy Vein Specialists, we offer the full menu of minimally invasive options, including:

  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
  • Varithena® microfoam injections
  • VenaSeal™ adhesive closure
  • Sclerotherapy for spider and reticular veins

Your provider will help determine which treatment is the right fit for your condition, anatomy, and goals.

Modern superficial vein procedures should not cause significant pain. Most patients report minimal discomfort. Treatments typically involve local anesthesia and are designed to be quick, safe, and well-tolerated. You may feel pinches, mild pressure, warmth, or a brief burning sensation depending on the procedure. All treatments take 15 minutes or less.

Recovery from minimally invasive vein treatment is generally mild. Most people:

  • Return to normal activities the same day
  • Walk immediately after treatment
  • Wear compression stockings for a short period
  • May experience mild bruising or soreness that resolves within days

Treated veins are usually closed permanently and will not return. However, vein disease is a chronic condition — meaning new veins may develop over time. Early evaluation and ongoing follow-up help maintain long-term results.

Insurance typically covers treatment when it is medically necessary — for example, when symptoms affect daily life or when ultrasound documents underlying reflux. Cosmetic-only treatments, such as sclerotherapy for spider veins without underlying disease, are usually self-pay. Our team will review your benefits and walk you through coverage before any treatment is scheduled.

Untreated venous insufficiency tends to progress, potentially causing:

  • Worsening discomfort or swelling
  • Skin discoloration around the ankles
  • Inflammation or phlebitis
  • Ulceration in advanced cases

Early intervention typically leads to better results, easier recovery, and a much lower risk of long-term complications.

Yes. Modern vein procedures are extremely safe when performed by experienced providers. Complications are rare, and your clinician will review all risks and precautions with you before any treatment.

Schedule a consultation. We'll review your symptoms, perform a detailed exam and ultrasound if needed, and build a personalized plan for your vein health. You can request an appointment from our contact page or call (202) 539-4334.

Before Your Visit

What to expect, what to bring.

Allow about an hour

A first visit usually includes a clinical exam, a detailed history, and (often) a vascular ultrasound. We schedule with breathing room so nothing is rushed.

Bring your insurance card

And a list of any current medications, prior vein treatments or procedures, and any imaging or records you have from outside providers.

Wear comfortable clothing

Loose-fitting pants or shorts work well. We'll ask you to expose the legs for the exam and any imaging that's done that day.
